Recording Industry Bans Musician From Charts For Supporting Free Music

One of the favorite lines out of the recording industry honchos when confronted about musicians who are against industry efforts to sue individuals who share files is that the industry execs support whatever choice the musicians make for themselves. If the musicians want to free their music, the execs say, that’s their choice. Funny, then, that the industry execs are acting out against a young musician who wants her music to be free. BPI, the UK version of the RIAA, has banned a twelve year-old singer songwriter from a new music chart they were creating for schools. The reason, apparently, is that BPI doesn’t want to promote young Amy Thomas’ music, since she’s signed to a music label that doesn’t support BPI’s stance on suing file sharers. Obviously, BPI is free to set up its charts however it wants — but it really should stop claiming to the world that it represents whatever artists want.

Massive Growth of the Blogosphere Continues

In summary:

Technorati is now tracking over 50 Million Blogs.
The Blogosphere is over 100 times bigger than it was just 3 years ago.
Today, the blogosphere is doubling in size every 200 days, or about once every 6 and a half months.
From January 2004 until July 2006, the number of blogs that Technorati tracks has continued to double every 5-7 months.
About 175,000 new weblogs were created each day, which means that on average, there are more than 2 blogs created each second of each day.
About 8% of new blogs get past Technorati’s filters, even if it is only for a few hours or days.
About 70% of the pings Technorati receives are from known spam sources, but we drop them before we have to send out a spider to go and index the splog.
Total posting volume of the blogosphere continues to rise, showing about 1.6 Million postings per day, or about 18.6 posts per second.
This is about double the volume of about a year ago.
The most prevalent times for English-language posting is between the hours of 10AM and 2PM Pacific time, with an additional spike at around 5PM Pacific time

The recent round of discussion of enterprise mashups has been a good one, led primarily by a stellar write-up recently by Galen Gruman, and highlights a phenomenon that is nigh upon us. In der Schweiz beispielsweise experimentieren Lehrer mit MP3-Dateien im Unterricht: Die Oberstufe in Frauenfeld produzierte einen Audioguide über die Entwicklung von 16 lokalen Betrieben. Dazu wurden die Schüler mit Computer, Mikrofon und Player ausgestattet; zusätzliches Material wurde ausgeliehen. Die Webschule - ein Zukunftsmarkt?

Seitdem bekannt ist, dass die Zwillinge Bill und Tom von der Teenie-Band Tokio Hotel eine Internetschule besuchen, gerät diese Form der Bildungsvermittlung ins Rampenlicht. Wie funktioniert nun das Konzept? Über das Internet können die Schüler ihre Lernpakete, die für sie individuell zusammengestellt werden, herunterladen, bearbeiten und per Post zur Korrektur zuschicken. Die Prüfung für den Haupt- oder Realschulabschluss muss dann allerdings persönlich an einer Schule am Wohnort abgelegt werden.

Handelt es sich jetzt bei der Internetschule um ein lukratives Geschäftsmodell? Die Web-Individualschule aus Bochum betreut derzeit 35 Jugendliche aus ganz Deutschland. Die Schüler sind nicht alle Promis, wie Bill und Tom, sondern auch Hochbegabte, im Ausland lebend oder Problemkinder, die nicht mehr in eine normale Schule integrierbar sind. Die Zielgruppe ist also sehr klein, um mit einer Internetschule wirklich reich zu werden.

Hintergrundinfo: Nur bei bestimmten Voraussetzungen müssen die Kinder nicht am Präsenzunterricht teilnehmen: Sie sind Leistungssportler oder Künstler, die wie Zirkuskinder keinen festen Wohnsitz haben, sie müssen längerfristig im Krankenhaus bleiben oder leben im Ausland. Die Entscheidung darüber, ob jemand von der Schulpflicht befreit wird, fällt das jeweilige Kultusministerium. Pro Jahr erhalten in einem Bundesland nur wenige Dutzend eine Befreiung der Präsenzschulpflicht.

Der britische Psychologe Adrian White hat the World Map of Happiness veröffentlicht. Bewertungsfaktoren für die glücklichen Nationen sind Gesundheit, Wohlstand und Bildung.

Für seine Forschungen nutzte White Daten, die von den Vereinten Nationen, dem US-Geheimdienst CIA und anderen Organisationen veröffentlicht worden waren. Die Daten stammen aus Studien mit insgesamt etwa 80.000 Teilnehmern, bei denen auch Fragen im Zusammenhang mit Glück und Zufriedenheit gestellt worden waren.

Folgende Top 10 haben sich ergeben:

Und wie hat sich Deutschland geschlagen? Auf Platz 35 von insgesamt 178 sind wir gelandet.
