Der US-Halbleiter-Produzent National Semiconductor will jedem seiner 8500 Angestellten einen iPod schenken. Über den Download von Firmen-Podcasts und anderen Kurznachrichten auf die Geräte will die Geschäftsführung die unternehmensinterne Kommunikation verbessern.

Jeder Mitarbeiter von National Semiconductor soll einen videofähigen MP3-Player von Apple mit 30 Gigabyte-Festplatte bekommen. Das Unternehmen stellt integrierte analoge Schaltkreise her, wie sie auch in iPods eingesetzt werden.

A CLO colleague of mine recently asked me what he should be discussing with his group in this giant Midwestern firm about e-learning. It’s the standard “What is hype and what is real?” question. He knew I have been an early advocate and full-time researcher on e-learning since 1993. Here are five solid points I told him he could live by:

1. E-learning is for real, and it’s here to stay.
If a training officer does not know this and believe this, he or she is out of the loop and behind the times. One hundred percent of major companies and most mid-size companies use e-learning. Too many CLOs are not aware of the extent of it. Anything new and complex can be intimidating, but it takes investing time to learn about the technology ….

Forrester: Contextual Learning Boosts Performance

The convergence of learning and work launches a new era for supporting the needs of workers to learn while they work. While eLearning courses and classroom instruction will always have their place, today’s workers often don’t have the time to take formal courses composed of many lessons. Instead, these workers need on-the-spot training available in the many personalized tools and resources they interact with to reach peak job performance. Meeting this need prompted two large enterprises, IBM and Nike, to make learning contextual — delivering learning in bite-size pieces and integrating it into the work environment while minimizing work disruption. While each took different contextual learning approaches, both boosted worker performance.
